Communication – getting and keeping people involved

How do you get as many people in your group as possible to participate in your fundraiser?  You need to make sure that everyone understands why you are fundraising – what is the goal?  And you need to keep people committed by ensuring excellent communication at the beginning, throughout and the end of the campaign.

Kick-off event

A kick-off event is a good idea to get thing going. This way the group can be motivated and you can make sure that everyone understands what the goal is and how you aim to achieve it.  This is an excellent way to communicate details about individual sales goals, information about the products or event, tips on how to approach potential supporters etc.  Other forms of communication that should be used include phone calls, letters, emails, posters and websites.  The more avenues of communication you have, the greater are your chances that the message will get through.

Increasing parent involvement

If you are in a situation where you are struggling to get parent involvement to attend initial meetings to launch or discuss fundraising, try creating a special incentive for attendance.  For example, you may want to have some entertainment or have the group put on a special performance, or have door prizes.  Parents are more likely to show up to support their kids than simply for a parent meeting.  You can then use this opportunity to launch your fundraiser, recruit volunteers, and provide an opportunity for input to make those present feel that their ideas are valuable.

Get people involved from the beginning

You need to discuss your goals – both in terms of what the money will be used for and how much money is needed.  Also try to get people involved before the selling starts – they will be much more likely to help if they have been included from the start.  The more committed members you have, the more successful your campaign will be.

Keep communication strong all the way through

While communication at the start of the fundraiser is critical to get as many people as possible involved, don’t forget to keep up the communication throughout.  Let everyone know how it is going, highlight specific successes and celebrate when goals are reached.  Recognise those who have worked hard to make the campaign a success and encourage everyone along the way.
