Looking back - how effective was your fundraising campaign?

It is important for a fundraising committee to assess how effective they were in running a certain fundraiser and make changes if necessary for the next one.

Communication

How was your committee or group communication?  Communication is incredibly important in a successful fundraising campaign.  Fundraising ideas and goals need to be effectively communicated not only amongst the committee and members of the group, but also the community.  You should evaluate how effective communication was in your meetings – did you have an agenda so that you could stay focussed and accomplish everything you needed to without running out of time.  How well was your cause and all the details of the campaign communicated to your group?  Did everyone understand exactly what you were trying to do?  If your group was not sure of the goal or what their role was in achieving it, you cannot expect them to be able to effectively communicate this to the community from whom you asking support.  How well did you communicate your goal to the community and the media?  Were people aware that there was a fundraiser going on?  Were your potential donors educated about your cause?

Keeping Records

Keeping records to detail exactly how you went about your fundraiser is a tremendous help for planning future events and for new committee members.  It is good to record who was involved in the fundraiser, what the timeline was, what costs were involved, how much was raised against the budget, where supplies were purchased from, what advertising material was used, what publicity mechanisms were used, and even include photos of the event.  This type of record keeping will help you to learn from your fundraiser and allow your organisation to grow from strength to strength.  Having detailed records will also be appealing to potential new volunteers who may feel intimidated by not knowing what to do.  This is a way for them to be able to jump right in.

Survey your participants

If you have run a number of fundraising efforts over the year, it may be useful to get participants to rank them in order of preference, given what the fundraiser entailed and how much money was raised.  Remember if your participants are not happy with certain fundraisers they are not likely to want to give their support next time.  Also, if your members are given the opportunity to voice their opinions you are keeping the lines of communication open and are likely to get greater involvement from them.
